Making a Difference in Mozambique

theDifference traveled to Maputo, Mozambique, in southeastern Africa to facilitate a 5-day executive management workshop for Friends in Global Health (FGH), a non-government organization (NGO) that aims to implement health development programs primarily focused on AIDS treatment and prevention.

Operating in health facilities throughout 12 districts of Zambezia, the country’s second most populous province with an HIV prevalence estimated at nearly 20%, FGH had outgrown its management structure and operating model during a period of rapid expansion over the past 2 years.
Tom Kehner, Executive Director of The Difference, and Steve Keast, Visual Modeler and Graphic Facilitator from Sydney, Australia, guided the FGH leadership team through a process of discovery, decision-making, and design to establish a baseline for leadership roles and responsibilities within a patient-focused operating model. The outcomes produced by the team now form the foundation for FGH’s transition to a locally controlled NGO.
